Coal County Death Certificate Fees

A certified copy of a death certificate costs $15. The fee is not refundable, even if the state does not find a match. Additional copies cost $15 each as well. You pay by check or money order made out to OSDH for mail requests. Cash works for in-person visits at state offices. Credit cards are not accepted at the office counter, but you can use a credit card through VitalChek. That service adds its own processing fee on top of the state fee.

The amendment fee is $25. This covers changes or corrections to information on a death certificate. You file the amendment with the Oklahoma State Department of Health along with supporting documents and a copy of your ID.

There are three ways to request a Coal County death certificate. You can go in person, mail the request, or order online. In-person visits take about an hour. Mail takes around four weeks. Online orders through VitalChek are often faster than mail but come with an extra charge. Each method requires a completed application and a copy of your photo ID.

For in-person visits, Coal County residents have three state offices to choose from. The main one is in Oklahoma City at 1000 NE 10th Street. The Tulsa office sits at the James O. Goodwin Health Center, 5051 S. 129th East Ave. A satellite office in McAlester at 1400 East College Avenue is the closest option for most Coal County residents, given its location in southeastern Oklahoma. Will call pickup hours are 12:00 to 4:45 PM, Monday through Friday.

Mail requests go to Vital Records Service, PO Box 53551, Oklahoma City, OK 73152. Include the application, a photocopy of your ID (not the original), and a check or money order for $15 per copy.

Coal County Death Records Eligibility

Under Title 63 O.S. Section 1-323, death records more than 50 years old are open to anyone. You still need to fill out the form and show ID, but you do not need to prove a relationship. For records less than 50 years old, you must be an eligible party. This usually means you are a spouse, parent, child, or someone with a legal need for the record. The application asks for your relationship to the deceased person.

A valid photo ID is required. The state accepts a driver's license, passport, military ID, or tribal photo ID. Expired licenses are accepted if they expired less than three years ago. If you lack a primary ID, you can use two secondary forms of identification, but the certificate will be mailed to you rather than handed over in person.

Coal County Health Department

The Coal County Health Department is in Coalgate. Many people call this office first when looking for a death certificate. The staff can answer questions and point you to the right state office. But they do not issue death certificates. That is handled only by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. The county health department offers public health services like immunizations and environmental health, but vital records are outside their scope.

Note: The Coal County Health Department cannot process death certificate requests or accept payment for them.

Coal County Genealogy and Historical Records

Genealogy researchers working in Coal County can use several resources. The Oklahoma Historical Society has a research center in Oklahoma City with free access to Ancestry Library Edition, Fold3, and HeritageQuest. These databases cover census records, military files, and some vital record indexes that can help trace family lines in the Coal County area.

The Gateway to Oklahoma History has digitized newspapers you can search for obituaries and death notices from Coal County. This is particularly useful for deaths before 1917, when filing was not yet mandatory. Cemetery records and funeral home logs through the OHS can also help fill in gaps. Coal County has a small population, so local records tend to be more manageable to search through than those from larger counties.
