Payne County Death Certificate Process

When someone dies in Payne County, the funeral director files the death certificate with the state. The Oklahoma State Department of Health stores it at the Office of Vital Records in Oklahoma City. The Payne County Clerk does not hold death certificates. Neither does the health department. Certified copies come only from the state.

Each copy costs $15. That fee covers the search and one certified copy if a match is found. The fee is not refundable. If they find no record, you still lose the $15. Additional copies cost $15 each. You can pay by check or money order made out to OSDH. Cash works for in-person visits. Credit cards are only accepted through VitalChek, which adds its own service charge.

Under Title 63 O.S. Section 1-323, death records more than 50 years old are open records. Anyone can request them. You still need to complete the application, show your ID, and pay the $15 fee. But no proof of relationship is required for records that old. Records less than 50 years old need proof of eligibility.

Will call pickup runs from 12:00 to 4:45 PM on weekdays. Same day service is no longer available at any of these locations, so you will need to allow time for processing.
